Reebok Summer Championships Day 2: Morning Session
The Reebok Create-N-Finish Cup continued today with the semifinals, and each individual team showed exactly why their were still in it. The 10am match up between the Dakota Schoolers, and the MBA Elite pitted 6’9 forward Cody Larson (Sioux Falls) against the duo of LaQuinton Ross & Deville Smith, and although Larson and the Schoolers put forth a good effort, the team from Jackson, MS proved to be to much; running away with a 53 to 38 victory. Which puts them in the fifth place game against Rafer Alston’s New York Panthers, and dropping the Schoolers into the seventh place game against James Terrell & D-One Sports.
Team Detroit broke out to a nice lead in the start of the11:15am game against the Texas Bluechips, but due to a strong inside presence, and a will to get everyone involved; the Bluechips mounted a comeback, and pulled out a three point victory over Team Detroit. Ray McCallum, and Trey Zeigler turned in a subpar performances in the loss that sends them to the third place game to be played later tonight.
California Supreme vs. Playaz Basketball Club rounded out the semifinals. Four players combining for 76 points for the California Supreme, seemed to be enough to seal the deal, and catapult the Supreme over the Playaz Basketball Club with a 97 to 86 victory, despite a valiant effort from Myles Davis contributing 21 points in the loss. This places the California supreme and the Texas Bluechips (navy) in the Create-N-Finish Cup Championship to be played tonight at 8:00pm.
2009 Reekbok Summer Championships: Day 1
Day 1 of the Reekbok Summer Championships did not disappoint. From the very first tip of the ball, until the last game of the night fans and coaches alike where witness to a wide range of talent from across the country. However the parity within the tournament made for exciting game after exciting game. Reebok hosted the 3rd annual Create-N-Finish cup, that allows for eight elite teams to challenge for the cup.

The Texas Bluechips (Navy) of Dallas, TX squeaked by the D-One Sports team out of North Carolina, despite a valiant effort from D-One’s James Terrell (Burlington Cumm), and Quincy Miller (Quality Education) who put in 15 & 17 points respectfully. In the end however the Bluechips muscled their way to a 55 to 51 victory catapulting them into the semifinal match up with the winner of the New York Panther, Team Detroit game.
In the second game of the cup, Team Detroit found themselves trying to figure out how to handle the pressure defense of the New York Panthers, only to find their shots half way through the first half. Lead by point guard Ray McCallum (Detroit Country Day), who had 10 points, but chipped in about eight to nine assist. His teammate Trey Zeigler (Mt. Pleasant High) benefited most by the leadership of McCallum by putting in 25 points of his own, in the routing of the New York Panthers who never seemed to be able to find their game. Final score: Team Detroit (70), New York (52).

The next game of the night featured the California Supreme from Inglewood, CA against the Dakota Schoolers out of Sioux Falls, SD. This was a game of fundamentals versus out right athletic ability. Keala King (Dominguez High) contributed with a quiet 13 points as well as three other of his teammates in a nine point victory over the Schoolers from Sioux Falls. Final score: Supreme (71), Schoolers (60).

The final game of the quarterfinals for the night put the Playaz Basketball Club of Paterson,NJ against MBA Elite from Jackson, MS. Despite 37 points combined by MBA’s LaQuinton Ross (West Marion) & Deville Smith (TBA), the Elite would find themselves humbled by the team out of New Jersey. With Players such as Myles Davis (St. Peter’s)Â displaying his own version of jazz, by netting 24 points on the night to lead his Playaz Basketball club to a 60 to 52 victory over the very talented MBA Elite squad.

Today’s games have been nothing short of surprising, with athletes not yet on the radar showcasing their skills; which will make for more theatrics in the next few days as these teams plus the rest of the field try to fight their way to the final rounds of the tournament.
